Situated in a dip in the valley, Porthtowan, although not much more than a small hamlet, is a popular seaside resort. It has, over the past few years, undergone something of a regeneration and is developing a mix of chic sophistication together with old fashioned seaside charm.

One of the leading lights in this regeneration has been the very popular Blue Bar at the entrance to the beach. The Blue, with its surfer cool theme, is a great hang out for those who wish to soak up the sun, whilst listening to chilled out music and enjoying a light lunch or an evening meal. There are also several popular more traditional establishments catering for all the family.

The focal point is yet again the beach. Edged by sand dunes, surrounded by towering cliffs its dramatic seascape is awe-inspiring. When the tide recedes it reveals a vast expanse of sandy beach several miles long. This is a popular destination for surfers, families and walkers who, at certain times of the day, are able to walk over to Chapel Porth cove and enjoy a pleasant stop at the National Trust café. Surfing is the most predominant activity in Porthtowan and the beach is the annual venue for the Cornish and Open surf contest.
Porthtowan is around 4 miles from the A30.
